Burwell Tompkins
M, b. circa 1816
- Relationship
- 2nd great-grandson of John Tompkins
Burwell Tompkins was the son of Partin Tompkins and Elizabeth (--?--). He married Agnes L. Moore, on 27 November 1835 at Stewart, Georgia, United States.1
Biography of Burwell Tompkins:
There is a record of a Burwell Tompkins marrying Agnes Moore in Stewart Co. Georgia on 27 November 1835. The only Tompkins families that were in that area in the 1830's were the families of Samuel (1765) and Partin (1785) . Thus the Burwell that married Agnes Moore is most likely to be the son of Samuel or Partin. We know that Burwell Tompkins (1770) of Washington Co. Georgia had a son named Burwell Tompkins born 22 March 1814 according the John Young Tompkins bible record. Burwell, son of Burwell (1770) also married Mary Lord 22 October 1840 in Washington Co. Georgia. We are thus sure that the Burwell who married Agnes Moore in Stewart Co. is not the son of Burwell (1770). We also believe that Burwell is the son of Partin Tompkins as he seems too young to be a son of Samuel Tompkins (1765).
We next find the Burwell Tompkins family listed in the 1840 Census of Stewart Co. GA living near the family of Partin Tompkins (1770). There is only one male child age 5-10 innumerated in Burwell's family. It is not known who this child is as the age seem to be too high. However, it is likely Leander, who we find in the 1850 Census of Choctaw Co., Mississippi.
In the 1850 Census of Choctaw Co., Mississippi we find the family of Burwell Tompkins (1816) as follows:
Fm.487 Dw. 488
TOMPKINS
i.Burwell 34 m Farmer 200 GA
ii.Agnes S. 30 f SC
iii.Leander 12 m GA
iv.Margaret 10 f GA
v.George 6 m AL
vi.Georgian 6 f AL
vii.Martha 4 f AL
viii.Mary 3 f AL
ix.James 3/12 m MS
x.Parting 3/12 m MS
This is clearly the Burwell Tompkins who married Agnes Moore in 1835 in Randolph Co. Georgia. Based on the birth places of his children it appears he left Stewart Co., Georgia about 1841 when his father and some of his siblings left Georgia for Alabama. Since his father went to Covington Co. Alabama, it is likely that Burwell did also. However, it appears Burwell moved his family from Covington Co. Alabama to Choctaw Co., Mississippi about 1849. Note that he named one of the twin sons born in 1850, Parting, no doubt named after Burwell's father, Partin. There is no Samuel's in the family thus further supporting the rationale that Burwell (1816) is the son of Partin Tompkins (1770).

Stephen Wright Tompkins
M, b. circa 1812, d. circa 1837
- Relationship
- 2nd great-grandson of John Tompkins
Stephen Wright Tompkins was the son of Samuel Tompkins and Polly (--?--). He married Serena L. Williams, on 15 September 1836 at Macon, Bibb, Georgia, United States.1 Stephen died circa 1837 at Stewart, Georgia, United States.2
Biography of Stephen Wright Tompkins:
We are confident that Stephen Wright Tompkins is the son of Samuel Tompkins (c1775-c1855) last of Covington Co., Alabama. Stephen could only be the son of Partin or Samuel Tompkins. Both Partin and Samuel were brothers and both were living in Stewart Co. Georgia from 1828 to 1841. Partin had a son named Stephen who moved to Covington Co. Alabama and appears in the 1850 Census living in the same household as Partin. Thus the Stephen that went to Alabama is the son of Partin. Stephen Wright Tompkins married Selena Williams and died in Stewart Co. Georgia shortly after the 1837 marriage. Thus Stephen Wright Tompkins has to be the son of Samuel, because Partin's son Stephen survived. Also a Stephen W. Tompkins witnessed a deed for sale of land from Harmon H. Howard to Samuel Tompkins on 23 December 1836 in Stewart Co. Georgia [DB F p. 227-228] which also suggests Stephen W. was related to Samuel as who else but his son would he use to witness a deed. A S.W. Tompkins is also listed on a list of members of the Stewart County Guard dated 13 February 1836.
