William was over six feet tall, very slim, and had a handle-bar mustache. It is said was one of the finest men, helped found his church in Bonita Springs, Lee Co., Florida. William and his wife, Josephine had moved to Lee County in 1910. They had a filling station/grocery store and orange grove on the side of the Imperial River and U.S. Highway 41.

Samuel joined Company F, of the 11th Florida Infantry of the Confederate Army as a private on 28 February 1863 at Madison, Florida, along with his father, Israel, and his Uncles Joseph and Benjamin Franklin Townsend. His Confederate military record indicates he was reported dead at Seabrook Hospital on 23 Aug 1864. He died of wounds received in battle and of chronic diarrhea. He thus died at age nineteen, two weeks before his father died.
