Thomas Townsend Sr.

M, b. circa 1665, d. August 1728
Thomas Townsend Sr. was the son of John Townsend. He married (--?--) (--?--) circa 1696. He married Sarah (--?--) circa 1706 at Accomack, Virginia, British Colonial America. He died in August 1728 at Ewomus Branch, New Church, Accomack, Virginia, British Colonial America.1
     Biography of Thomas Townsend Sr.:

Thomas Townsend arrived and settled in Accomack County of the Colony of Virginia about March 7, 1671/72. His name and the name of his father, John were on a list2 of 95 persons submitted by Deverox Browne to the Accomack County Court on that date to support Browne's petition for a 4,750-acre headright of land. The court granted the petition for underwriting the transport of these 95 individuals to the Colony.

Thomas Townsend next appears on the December 1681 tithable list3 for Accomack County suggesting that he had reached the age of 16 and was thus born about 1665 Records indicate he paid one tithable tax each year from 1684 to 1695, except for the years 1682–1684, when he appears to have been missed by the tax collector.

On February 15, 1684/85 Thomas was apprenticed4 to neighbor Richard Bundick by his father John Townsend until Thomas reaches the age of 21 .

On October 28, 1690, Thomas purchased 400 acres of land lying on Ewomus Branch from George Layfield and his wife, Elizabeth Stevens Layfield, of Somerset County, Maryland, for 16,000 pounds of tobacco.5 Elizabeth was the widow and heir of William Stevens, deceased. This land is located on the south and eastern side of present-day New Church, near the border with Maryland.

On 12 July 1702 Thomas Townsend was gifted 100 acres of forest on the headwaters of Kickotank Creek. 6 This was half of the land that John Townsend purchased in 1696. That land "fell to my wife. Rachell Royall and Esther Townsend being both sisters and daughters of said Thomas Townsend" according to a deed7 dated December 6, 1726, wherein Benjamin Royal and his wife, Rachel Royal, sold 50 acres of that property to Darby Mackcarte.

On August 16, 1704, Thomas recorded his cattle mark as "TT" in Accomack County. 8

On December 4, 1705, Thomas purchased two tracts of land from William Jarman: a 400-acre tract9 on the south side of Guilford Creek, formerly known as the Elizabeth Dies plantation, and a 75-acre tract10 of marshland, also on the south side of Guilford Creek. On October 7, 1707, Job Trewit lawfully conveyed that same 75 acres of marshland to Thomas Townsend, stating he had sold the property to William Jarman previously "but never conveyed it in due form of law" to Jarman. The new deed was executed to correct this legal formality.

On April 3, 1716, "Thomas Townsend Sr. Weaver, acting out of "love and affection," deeded 200 acres of his 400-acre plantation on Ewomus Branch—the land he purchased in 1690—to his son Thomas Townsend Jr.11 This is the first mention that Thomas Sr. was a weaver by trade. Both his will and other records, however, indicate his occupation as a planter.

Thomas Townsend Sr. died on his farm on Ewomus Branch before September 3, 1728, when his will was proved in court.12

John Townsend

M, b. circa 1640, d. before 7 March 1709/10
John Townsend married Faith (--?--) circa 1675 at Accomack, Virginia, British Colonial America.1 He died before 7 March 1709/10 at Accomack, Virginia, British Colonial America.
     Biography of John Townsend:

John Townsend arrived and settled in Accomack County of the Colony of Virginia about March 7, 1671/72. His name and the name of his son, Thomas were on a list2 of 95 persons submitted to the Accomack County Court by Devorox Browne. Browne petitioned for, and was granted, a 4,750-acre headright of land for funding the transport of those individuals to the colony.

John Townsend's name next appears in the December 1674 list of titheables3 for Accomack County, paying one tithe in the precinct of John Wise. While his name is absent from the 1675 list, he appears every subsequent year from 1676 to 1689, paying a single tithe each year. His name was recorded variously as John Tounson, John Townsend, and John Touning in county records during these years, indicating those variations referred to the same individual. He also was the only Townsend in the titheable records until 1681 when son Thomas appeared.

On July 18, 1676, John Townsend acquired 115 acres of land4 from Griffith Savage for "full consideration and valuable satisfaction in hand." The land was located "on the North Branch of Guilford Creek formerly called Muddy Brook" in Accomack County. This transaction suggests John likely received the land as payment for work performed for Savage or for fulfilling an indenture agreement.

By the winter of 1683/84, the John Townsend family appears to have fallen into great distress. After living in Virginia for 12 years, John was seemingly unable to support his family, which led him to sell his plantation and apprenticed four of his children. On January 15, 1684/85, John sold the 115 acres on Guilford Creek5 to John Read for 9,000 pounds of tobacco. A month later, on February 15, 1684/85, he apprenticed his daughter Elizabeth6 until she reached the age of 18 and his son James7 until he reached the age of 21 to Nicholas Mellichop. On the same date, he apprenticed his son Thomas8 to his neighbor Richard Bundick until he reached the age of 21. Later that year, on October 14. 1785 he apprenticed his son John9 to neighbor George Johnson until he reaches the age of 21.

All four apprenticeships required Mellichop, Bundick or Johnson to provide "good and sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging and apparell" to the apprentices. At the conclusion of their apprenticeships, Elizabeth and James were each to receive a cow and a calf, while Thomas was to receive a one-year-old heifer. All four documents were signed by John "his U mark" Townsen.

It was not until 12 years later that John Townsend was able to acquire land of his own again. On June 17, 1696, he purchased 200 acres of land on the south side of Kickotank Branch for 5000 pounds of tobacco from Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer. 10

On June 12, 1702, John Townsend, planter, and his wife Faith sold 100 acres of forest— half of the plantation he bought in 1696—to "my son Thomas Townsend" for 2,500 pounds of tobacco. 11 This deed of transfer clearly establishes Thomas Townsend as the son of John, even though Thomas is not mentioned in John Townsend’s later will.

John Townsend died before March 7, 1709/10 the date his will was proved in court.12
