Biography of Noah Townsend:
“Noah was given college training by his Uncle Light and took up surveying, the same as his Uncle Light. Upon graduation in l847, at age 22, Noah was given $100 by his Uncle Light, and, among other things, a horse, which he promptly mounted and rode to Florida, arriving about the time his father, Jack, drowned in the Suwannee River.”4
“At the end of his horseback ride to Florida, Noah settled in the vicinity of present day Hawthorne where he became a teacher in the public schools, his teaching career being interrupted by a six months period of military service in the Mexican War. At the end of the 1850 school term, he was married to one of his pupils, Sarah "Sallie” Gillette, age seventeen. Family members recalled they were often complimented on being such a handsome couple, and later how Sallie chided the children that none of them were ever so handsome as their father. It is said his features were light in keeping with his Nordic ancestry, while hers were dark in keeping with her Latin ancestry. He became an expert surveyor and early turned his interests to farming and stock raising1, and was blessed with lands and cattle as well as the following large family:”5
Noah and his wife, Sarah are buried, with many of their children, descendants, relatives and friends in the Townsend Cemetery, near Hawthorne, Alachua County, Florida.
