P.28,Dorthy Morgan obtained from Dottie Tompkins Odum of Savannah a genealogical list that showed that the wife of Stephen Tompkins was Mary E. Sanford of Cochran, Ga. b.5 May 1870, d. 13 May 1913 in Wheeler County. Further research by this compiler could not confirm that the name of the wife of Stephen Tompkins was Mary E. Sanford. There is a Mary Sanford age 11 in the 1880 Census of Telfair County Georgia as the daughter of John and Martha Sanford. That Mary Sanford's birth date and birth place is very close to that of Mary E. Sanford, wife of Steven Tompkins. However, the Mary Sanford, daughter of John and Martha Sanford of the 1880 census's full name was Mary Leonora Sanford born about 1868 in Hawkinsville Georgia which is 11 miles from Cochran Georgia. Mary Leonora Sanford married Reuben Cummings in 1895, had several children and lived the rest of her life in Dodge and Telfair County Georgia, dying in Telfair in 1940. Mary Leonora Sanford of the 1880 Census and Mary E. Sanford, wife of the Stephen Tompkins are not the same persons.. (Hereafter cited as Tompkins of Washington Co. Georgia).
