James Tompkins (M)
b. circa 1760, d. circa 1819
Pop-up Pedigree
Relationship=Son of (Progenitor) Tompkins.

     James was born circa 1760. He was the son of (Progenitor) Tompkins. He married Polly (--?--), circa 1780. James died circa 1819 in Washington Co., Georgia.

Biography of James Tompkins:

James Tompkins is included in this genealogy, as there is a James Tompkins who was taxed in 1816 and left an estate in 1819 in Jefferson County, Georgia. We also find a Polly Tompkins and two sons living in Washington County, Georgia in the 1820 Census.1 We believe that Polly is the widow of the James Tompkins who left the estate in Jefferson Co. and that he is a brother to Samuel Tompkins (1765-1860) and John Tompkins (1771-1840), as well as, the other Tompkins of that generation in Washington County. Our rationale supporting this is as follows:

The 1816 Jefferson County Tax on James Tompkins was for 2 slaves that he owned and no tax on any land and no poll tax on any adult males. James Tompkins 1819 Jefferson County Estate inventory was for two female slaves, a horse and saddle but no land. The lack of the poll tax and the lack of land being taxed or listed in the estate inventory suggest that James was not a landowner or resident of Jefferson County, Georgia. The 1819 estate appraisal was signed by John Tompkins, who had to be John Tompkins (1771-1840).

James A. Tompkins (M)
b. circa 1827, d. 15 February 1899
Pop-up Pedigree
Relationship=Great-grandson of (Progenitor) Tompkins.

     James was born circa 1827 in Washington Co., Georgia.1 He was the son of John W. Tompkins and Mary (--?--). He married Sarah McLendon,daughter of Josiah McLendon and Mary Grandberry on 22 June 1848 in Pike Co., Alabama.2 James A. Tompkins died on 15 February 1899 in Pike Co., Alabama.3

Biography of James A. Tompkins:

We believe the parents of the James A. Tompkins is John W. Tompkins (1803 GA) and his wife, Mary (1811 SC). James A. and his family are found in Pike Co. Alabama in the 1850 Census of Pike County, Alabama in the 1855, 1860, 1866, and 1870 Census of Covington County, Alabama and in Pike County, Alabama in the 1880 Census. Our basis for this belief is as follows: The 1830 and 1840 GA Census records show that John W. had a son about the age of James A. Also the names of James A. 's male children, Samuel and William suggest he is descended from Samuel (1765)'s line. Also in the 1866 State Census, James is found next door to John W. Tompkins (1835), the son of John W. Tompkins (1803), suggesting he might be John (1835)'s brother. Also, Mary Tompkin, age 75 (born 1805 in SC) is listed as his Mother in the 1880 Census, clearly suggesting he is Mary's son.
