  • [S610] Marie Townsend Butler, "Townsend Papers", A copy of these unpublished papers were supplied to this writer by Hollis Boatright of Bianco, TX in June 2005. Hollis obtained them from her mother, Ms. West, who in turn received them from Ms. Butler via a letter dated 14 August 2004, This is a 6 page document containing abstracts of the "old Townsend papers preserved by Rogers and Opal Townsend from the Plantation office in Marlboro." This document was prepared by Ms. Butler and contains abstracts of nearly fifty documents dating from 1764 to 1919. These abstracts appear to be remarkably complete and accurate of the papers that had been collected by Ms. Butler's father, John Rogers Townsend, now deceased. Ms. Butler indicated to this writer that it would be impossible to photocopy the original papers as she no longer had them, some were framed, and they were in poor condition and too "dull" to copy. This writer has compared Ms. Butler's abstracts of two documents to copies of the originals that were obtained from the SC Archives microfilm collection and found that the abstracts were completely accurate and without error. Copy in posession of writer.
