She was living with the family of her brother-in-law and sister, Francis and Serena Kincannon, in the 1860 census for Newton Co., Missouri.

Joplin News-Herald, Joplin, Missouri, Monday, Nov. 28, 1927. "SAMPLES - Mrs. Emaline Samples, 83 years old, a resident of Joplin for thirty-eight years, died at 4:55 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Calvin S. Race, 2124 May avenue. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mahala Fowler, a daughter, Mrs. Calvin S. Race, a niece and a nephew. Funeral rites will be conducted at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Blendville Christian church. The Rev. W. H. Flippin, pastor will officiate. The body will lie in state from 9 o'clock in the morning until the hour of the funeral. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery."1
