     Hardin Thomas Bowers was born on 19 May 1855 at Caldwell, Missouri, United States. He married Sarah Ann Sample, daughter of George Washington Sample and Lucy Ann Braden, on 23 October 1884 at Carthage, Jasper, Missouri, United States; The father G. W. Sample of Sarah A. Sample gave his assent to the marriage. He died on 27 April 1918 at Spring Valley Township, Cherokee, Kansas, United States, at age 62; paralysis. He was buried at Pleasant View Cemetery, Spring Valley Township, Cherokee, Kansas, United States.

He was one of the first three trustees of Pleasant View Cemetery, along with W. H. J. Wade and C. E. Rowland, when it was formed in 1911.

Source unknown: "Thomas Bowers. Hardin Thomas Bowers, son of Gilge and Sarah Bowers, was born May 19, 1855, and died April 27, 1918, aged 62 years, 11 months and 8 days. He had resided in Cherokee county 17 years, coming here from Barton County, Mo. He had been in poor health for two years and was confined to his bed for almost nine weeks during the last sickness. He bore his sickness patiently, never complaining, but always looking on the bright side of life. He was converted in October, 1908, and united with the Free Will Baptist church of which he remained a faithful member until his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Bowers, and two sons, Irvin and Elmer Bowers, and one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Thomas and six grand children, four brothers, J. F. Bowers, Nettleton, Mo; Charles Bowers, Mount Hope, Kas; William Bowers, Carthage, Mo., and Emanuel Bowers, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Clampit, of Iowa. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. John C. Booe, at the Shilo church, with interment in the Pleasant View cemetery.
     He has gone to that bright City
     To abide for ever more,
     He has left this world of sorrow
     He has reached a brighter shore.

Columbus Daily Advocate, Columbus, Kansas, April 29, 1918, p. 3: "Death of Thos. Bowers. Harden Thomas Bowers, 63 years of age, died Saturday morning at nine o'clock at his home three miles northwest of Baxter Springs. He had been ill for two years, and his death was due to paralysis. Funeral Services were held Sunday afternoon, and interment was made at Pleasant View cemetery. The deceased had been a resident of the Baxter neighborhood for nearly 25 years."1

     Sarah Ann Sample was born on 28 February 1867 at Macoupin, Illinois, United States. She was the daughter of George Washington Sample and Lucy Ann Braden. She married Hardin Thomas Bowers on 23 October 1884 at Carthage, Jasper, Missouri, United States; The father G. W. Sample of Sarah A. Sample gave his assent to the marriage. She died on 28 September 1943 at Garden Township, Cherokee, Kansas, United States, at age 76; cardiovascular, hypertension, thyrotoxicosis. A surprise birthday dinner was held Sunday, March 1, in honor Mrs. Sarah Bowers at her home, three miles north of the city, celebrating her sixty-ninth birthday anniversary. A dinner was served in cafeteria style. Following the dinner the honoree was presented with several gifts. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Chilon Carter and daughter, Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Jud Williams and son, Freddie, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bowers and children, Marie, Dorothy, Roy, Howard and Lloyd, all of Riverton; Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bowers of Joplin, Mrs. Helen Boyd and daughter, Shirley Sue, Mrs. Jennie Thomas and daughters, Lucille and Mildred, and Roy Terry, all of Webb City, and G. I. Bowers of Baxter Springs."

Joplin Globe, Joplin, Missouri, Wednesday, September 29, 1943: "Funeral Rites Friday for Mrs. Sarah Bowers. Galena, Kans., Sept. 28 - Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Ann Bowers, 76 years old, who died at 1:30 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, Elmer Bowers, of Riverton, will be held at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Shiloh church in the Quaker Valley district. The Rev. Roy Wade will officiate. Burial will be in the Shiloh cemetery, in charge of the Boice Undertaking Company. Mrs. Bowers had lived in Cherokee county 43 years, coming here from Nashville, Mo. She had been ill for some time. Surviving, besides the son, is a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Thomas of Torrance, Calif."1
