Daniel Carroll1

Daniel was born on 18 December 1838 at Barnwell, South Carolina, United States.2,3 He was the son of Burton Carroll and Mary Ann Jowers. He married Jane Morris, daughter of Jacob Morris and Susan (--?--), circa 1855 at Barnwell, South Carolina, United States.1 He married Martha Rebecca Mixson, on 2 June 1896 at Suwannee, Florida, United States.4 Daniel died on 4 August 1908 at Suwannee, Florida, United States, at age 69.
     Biography of Daniel Carroll:
Daniel Carroll enlisted 31 July 1863 as a private in Co. H., 1st Regt. Georgia Local Troops, CSA. On the roll for May and June, 1864 he is reported present, with remarks showing that he was in government employ at Augusta Arsenal. In Daniel's pension application of 26 October 1902, he stated "on or about the 14th day of December, 1864 I was accidentally wounded while fixing and cleaning old guns at the shops, by a gunshot from a gun that I was cleaning, said shot passing through my foot." For his service Daniel received a pension until his death. His widow, Martha R. Mixon Carroll also applied for a widows pension, but it was denied because she had not married him before 1895, which was required into order to be eligible for a widows pension. Burton Carroll

M, b. 16 July 1808, d. 9 September 1893
Burton was born on 16 July 1808 at South Carolina, United States. He was the son of Jacob Carroll. He married Angeline Jones.1 He married Mary Ann Jowers, daughter of George Jowers and Mary (--?--), circa 1834 at Barnwell, South Carolina, United States.2 He married Matilda Moore, on 25 February 1881 at Suwannee, Florida, United States.3 He married Adeline Fulford, on 26 December 1885 at Suwannee, Florida, United States.4 Burton died on 9 September 1893 at Suwannee, Florida, United States, at age 85. His body was buried in September 1893 at Macedonia Cemetery, Suwannee, Florida, United States.5
     Biography of Burton Carroll:
We believe that Burton is the son of Jacob Carroll (1784-1830) of Barnwell County South Carolina. The record on Jacob Carroll is sparse consisting mainly of a few early 1800 census records which were incomplete. (See biography of Jacob Carroll).

None the less, after identifying all the possible fathers of Jacob using census records we determined that Jacob Carroll is the most likely person to be Burton Carroll's father. Burton was clearly born in South Carolina, most likely in Barnwell County. He consistently indicated his place of birth as South Carolina on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records and we believed he was born in 1808 based on his tombstone. We also suspected Burton was the grandson of Thomas Carroll (1745-1802) as Thomas Carroll (1745-1802) was the only Carroll that we had found living in Barnwell County that could be Burton?s ancestor. The Thomas Carroll (1745-1802) Will showed he had two sons, Jacob and Thomas, either of which could be the father of Burton. We had also compiled all the Carroll households enumerated in the 1810 South Carolina Census. We found eight possible households that Burton could have been enumerated in. We were able to eliminate the four Carroll households of Richland District as we found credible information on-line that Burton was not a descendant of those families. We compiled all the 1810, 1820 and 1830 Census records for Carroll households in Barnwell, Orangeburg and Colleton Districts in South Carolina. That compilation showed that either Jacob or Thomas Jr. could be Burton's father. We also suspected that Burton and Abraham Carroll were brothers, as is discussed below. A review of the 1820 Census of Barnwell suggested that only Jacob, not Thomas Jr., could be the Father of Burton, assuming Abraham was Burton's brother. An on-line search for the make-up of the Jacob and Thomas Jr. family's yielded very little, except for the family of Thomas. The on-line IGI did have entries for what appears to be the entire Thomas Carroll Jr. family. We were not able to verify that information, but it did not contain any sons with the names Burton or Abraham and it did contain sons born during the same time period as Burton and Abraham. Thus the IGI information supported what the 1820 census records were suggesting, that Jacob was the father of Burton and probably Abraham. Obviously, further research on this family is required to support our belief that Jacob Carroll is the father of Burton.

The earliest record we found in the Barnwell Deed Index is a deed6 dated 23 Aug 1834, wherein Burton purchased 162 1/2 acres of land on Cane Piece Waters for $100 from Jacob Shipes. This land is likely where Burton and family were living in the 1840 Census discussed below as there is a Jacob Shipes enumerated six doors away from Burton in that census.

The next record we have found on Burton is his listing on page 209 of the 1840 Federal Census of Barnwell Co. South Carolina. That record lists Burton as Head of Family age 20-30, with two males under 5 years of age (Patrick and Daniel) and one female age 15-20 which is likely his wife, believed to be Mary Ann Jowers.

Living next door to Burton in the 1840 Census is the family of Abraham Carroll age 30-40. This appears to be the same Abraham Carroll who died in Barnwell Co. South Carolina leaving a Will dated 22 April 1868 [Barnwell Co. Will Book F, p. 105] in which he named his wife Sarah and his married children , Jacob Carrol (deceased), Catherine, (wife of Elijah Ford), A. R. E. Carroll, and Israel Carroll (deceased) and apparently unmarried children William, Edward, Martha Ann, Elisabeth, Joseph, George and David. It is likely that Abraham was a brother of Burton Carroll.

The next record we found on Burton is in a Deed dated 20 December 1847 wherein he sold 20 acres of land on the "waters of Tobi's Creek" in Barnwell Co. South Carolina to George Irwin for fifteen dollars. The deed is signed by Barton Carrol, his mark and Mary Carrol, her mark. The deed also implies that the land is in part owned by his wife, Mary, thus implying that she may have inherited it. The deed was not recorded until nine years later on 1 May 1858 and a notation on the side of the page (in the same handwriting as used in the deed) says "Delivered to George Jowers 7 of May 1858". [Barnwell Co. DB- LL p. 133] It is this reference to George Jowers that suggests that Mary is a Jowers and the daughter of George Jowers (1796).

We and others have thoroughly searched for the 1850 Census records for Burton and his children without success. Those records apparently do not exist. He must have been missed by the census taker.

We next find Burton and his family in the 1860 and 1870 Census of Barnwell Co. South Carolina. This indicates he was in Barnwell before and after the Civil War.

Burton's great granddaughter, Jessie Lee Gunter reported that Burton join the Confederate army to "tend the horses" and she also reported "he ended up putting together ammunition". [J. L. Gunter, "Edward Walton Carroll" THE HERALD, Vol. 12, #3, Fall 1989, Montgomery County (Texas) Genealogical & History Society Publication]. Burton could very well have worked with his son, Daniel, in the Augusta, Georgia Arsenal repairing and making guns and ammunitions during the Civil War. However, we have found no record of his war service. We did find Burton Carroll listed on the "Index of Veterans Buried in Suwannee County, Florida" which was reproduced by the Suwannee Valley Genealogical Society in their Fall, 1999, Volume VII, No. 3 newsletter. This Index was prepared by the WPA about 1940 and lists all Veterans buried in Suwannee Co. Florida. It lists Birton Carroll born 1808, died 1893, buried in Macedonia Cemetery as having served in the Civil War (Confederate) as a Private in Co. K 1st Florida Reserves. According to the 1860 and 1870 records Burton and much of his family were living in Barnwell Co. South Carolina at the time of the Civil War. There is thus no evidence that he was in Florida during the Civil war, so it is doubtful that he was in the Florida Reserves. It is however, very likely that he was in Augusta, Georgia during the Civil War (his son Daniel worked in the Augusta Arsenal and his son, Patrick enlisted in the Confederate army at Augusta) or still living in South Carolina. He thus may have been in either the Augusta Georgia Reserves or the South Carolina Reserves in some capacity and that may be the basis for Burton's name being in the Veterans Burial Index for Suwannee Co., Florida.

The Burton Carroll family separated following the Civil War. Burton and his sons, Patrick and Daniel and his daughter, Mary A. who married H. W. Wooley moved into Suwannee Co., Florida in the early 1870's where they raised their families until their deaths. His sons, Wilson Rufus, Edward Walton and daughter Frances moved into east Texas in the middle 1870's, where they remained raising their own families until their deaths. We have not been able to determine where or what happened to his son Solomon (or possibly Samuel). Thus Burton's descendants are well represented in North Florida and east Texas.

Burton's great granddaughter Jessee Lee Gunter [cited above] wrote that Burton "survived the war, but was murdered in 1894 at the age of 106. He had worked all week on the railroad, and was walking home with his paycheck." This story has not been verified but could in part be true. His gravestone in Macedonia Cemetery near Live Oak, Suwannee County, Florida shows his date of birth as 1808 and death as 1893. Census records suggest he was born 1810 to 1812, however we have chosen to use the gravestone date as his date of birth.
