     Sarah was born on 12 April 1798 at North Carolina, United States.1 She was the daughter of William Murphy and Mary Edwards. She married Theophilus Hardie, son of Allen Hardie and Martha Duggan, circa 1816 at Washington, Georgia, United States. Sarah died on 27 October 1876 at Stewart, Georgia, United States, at age 78. Her body was buried in October 1876 at Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Stewart, Georgia, United States.2
     Biography of Sarah Murphy:
According to the "History of Stewart County Vol II" Sarah was the daughter of William Mulkey/Murphy
of Washington County, Georgia. Sarah's maiden name was Murphy as proved by the Will and estate papers of William Murphy of Washington County, Georgia as well as being listed in the "Haygood Family Bible". [Personal communication from Donna Sarchet of Plainview, Texas 6 Jan 1993]

After the death of her first husband, Theophilus Harkie, Sarah married a neighbor, the Rev James Griffin, Sr. on 9 October 1835. Sarah and James Griffin had three children, Alexander b. 10 Aug 1836, Catharine Jane b. 12 Aug 1837 James Alamo, b. 1840. The Rev. Griffin died about 1843 and he is buried in the Old Union Church Cemetery in Stewart County. On 6 March 1837, Anselm L. Evans, a member of this church and probably a deacon, was made guardian of six of Sarah's minor children.

The History of Stewart County indicates that Theophilus Jr. was unmarried and died before 1850. There is, however, a Theophilus Hardy age 25, born in Georgia and an Elizabeth Hardy age 20, born in Georgia enumerated with the Larkin Family in the 1850 Census of Stewart County. This is quite possibly the son of Theophilus
Hardie (1780-1833) who married an Elizabeth.
