Mrs. Morgan in her book "The Tompkins of Washington Co. Georgia" indicates she is not sure William P. Tompkins is the son of Rukin as he could also be the son of Burrell Tompkins.

William P. Tompkins enlisted as a private on 10 September 1861. He died of disease in South Carolina Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia on 5 May 1862.

Enlisted on September 10 1861 as a private in the 28th Georgia Volunteers, Regiment Company B of the "Sandersville Volunteers". A Washington County Newspapper reported that he was wounded in battle at Chickhominy.3
