JOHN TRAVELER WEBB
John Traveler Webb, son of Samuel Sanders Webb and Louise Fowler, was born on February 1, 1853, near Atlanta Georgia. When he was three weeks old, his mother brought him and an older brother to the "Webb Place" on the Suwannee River. Since the covered wagon trip took 21 days, his father named him "Traveler", although others called him John T. Webb.(1)
When he was ten years old, his father died in the Civil War.(2) Three days before Christmas in 1875, he was married to Sarah Elizabeth Bailey, by his uncle, the Reverend Thomas Peter Webb.(3) He was a farmer who lived in the Enterprise community of Lee, Florida, and was a member of his uncle Tom's Midway Baptist Church.(1)
He and his wife had eleven children, six sons and 5 daughters. All of them grew up and married. They were Roxie Ada I877, Loura 1879, Lillia A. 1880, Samuel Tildon 1881, Vannie 0. 1883, Vallie 1884, William R. 1886, John Dennett 1887, Bythwood I888, Abbie 1891 and Tommie C. I894.(1)
His grandchildren living in Madison County, Florida, in 1972, were John Hazel Malone, Rev. Carl A. Webb, Mrs. Mellous Moore, Mrs. Frances Campbell, Mrs. Enoch Parker and Mrs. Hazel Woodward.(1)
He died on October 9, 1939, and is buried in Corinth Baptist Cemetery beside his wife who died nine years earlier. His marker says, "An honest man, is the noblest work of God."(1.)
