Samuel C. Scott (M)
b. circa 1828, d. circa 1877

     Samuel was born circa 1828 at South Carolina.1 He was the son of Taylor R. Scott. He married Elizabeth Kelly,daughter of Charles R. Kelly and Elizabeth Wiley on 21 December 1848 at Randolph Co., Georgia.2 He married Rebecca E. Kelly,daughter of George Wiley Kelly and Harriet Smith on 6 January 1853 at Randolph Co., Georgia.3 Samuel died circa 1877 at Colquitt, Miller Co., Georgia.
     Samuel's occupation: Farmer.
Biography of Samuel C. Scott:

Samuel C. Scott served in the Confederate Army as he is listed on the Muster Roll of Company K, 31st Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Evan's brigade, Gordon's Division of the Army of Northern Virginia C. S. A as "5th Sergeant, Sept. 5, 1861. Retired at reorganization May 13, 1862." [Henderson, Lillian - Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia Vol. III p. 651] His federal record on National Archives Microfilm, Microcopy 266, Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations From the State of Georgia Roll 406 show Samuel enrolled Sept. 5, 1861 at Dawson, Georgia by W. C. Thornton. He was on the Muster Roll at White Sulphur Springs of Sep. 18, 1861, Age 23. From Sept. 5 to Dec. 31, 1861 is shown as Absent on Sick Furlough. Samuel enrolled on the same day as his brothers, Stephen and Peter.

     Samuel, his wife, Rebecca and two children, Ellen and Rebecca were living next door to his father, Taylor in Calhoun County, Georgia in 1860 according the Census. In 1870 we find them living near Colquitt, Miller County, Georgia next door to the John Scott family, his brother and in the same county where his father, Taylor lived. That is the last record we have of Samuel. He likely died in Miller County and is buried there. His widow, Rebecca and children are next found in 1878 back in Terrell County, living with her father, George W. Kelly. Presumably, Samuel died and his widow and children went to live with her parents.

Angus Morgan Shirah Jr. (M)

     Angus was born on 7 April 1918 at Jakin, Early Co., Georgia. He married Beatrice Lorraine Borland,daughter of John Overton Borland and Eliza Delena Arnold on 14 December 1941 at South Mills, North Carolina.1 Angus died on 17 November 1977 at Tallahassee, Leon Co., Florida, at age 59. His body was buried on 19 November 1977 at Memory Gardens, Tallahassee, Leon Co., Florida.

Education: 1925-1928 Bellinger Hill School, Montgomery, AL 1928-1929 Carter Hill School, Montgomery, AL 1929-1931 Capitol Heights School, Montgomery, AL 1931-1933 Harmony School, Troy, AL 1933-1934 Woodlawn & Ramsey High Schools, Birmingham, AL (Note: Ramsey was a magnet type school and Angus was selected to attend) 1934-1938 Rehobeth High School, Dothan, AL (did not graduate)

In March 1938 he enlisted in the Navy in Macon, GA. He visited different parts of the nation and of the world. Early assignments were in aviation units attached to aircraft carriers where he advanced rapidly in ratings. Shortly after WWII began, he was awarded the rating of Chief Petty Officer and 2 years later (2-15-44) he was commissioned an Ensign. Some unusual war experiences were: Marshall & Gilbert Island Raids - 1942 (USS Yorktown CV-5) Battle of Coral Sea - 1942 (UT-5, USS Yorktown CV-5) Battle of Steward Island - 1942 (USS Enterprise CV-6) Occupation of Solomon Island - 1942 (USS Saratoga CV-3)

He was decorated with PUC with 1 star (USS Enterprise) and a Good Conduct Medal.

He joined the F&AM of Alabama in 1945 and the Scottish Rite of Freemason in 1947.

On January 30, 1959, Angus received his State Certificate of High School Equivalency through the US Navy. On July 1, 1964, Angus was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy with a commission of Lt. Commander. He was released in Norfolk, VA. He then moved the family to Tallahassee, FL to attend FSU and graduated on June 13, 1970 with a Batchelor's Degree in Social Studies Education. He received a teacher's certificate and began teaching at Amos P. Godby High School in September of 1970. He continued teaching until April of 1977 when he became ill with cancer and then died November 17, 1977.

Ezekiel Kelly and his wife, Elizabeth Smith are both buried in Sylvan Grove Cemetery. No birth dates are on the tombstones. Buried next to Ezekiel is Zora Kelly, born 1862, no death date, and Lanie Arnold Herring, born 30 September 1857, died 17 April 1922. These could be daughters of Ezekiel.
