b. circa 1755, d. after 1838
Daniel was born circa 1755. He married Sally Clifton. Daniel died after 1838 at Newton Co., Georgia.
Biography of Daniel C. Kelly: The make-up of the Daniel C. Kelly (c1755-c1838) family as shown in this genealogy is based in large part on family oral history that is well supported by a number of documents and circumstances. We believe this evidence clearly supports our make-up of much of the family of Daniel Kelly. The data also suggest that Daniel is the immigrant ancestor of this Kelly family line. He was born outside the United States and immigrated to this country sometime before 1783. We have collected over 40 records of all Daniel Kelly's in Georgia for the time period, 1780 to 1830 and have sorted those Daniel Kelly's into four groups. One group is of a Daniel Kelly, possible son of William Kelly, with likely siblings of William, Robert, John and Hannah that appear between 1791 and 1811 in deeds, tax rolls and land lottery rolls of Wilkes and Lincoln Counties of Georgia. We have identified this group as the Daniel Kelly of Lincoln County Georgia group. The second group we have identified is what we call the Daniel Kelly of Greene Co. Georgia which we believe is the Daniel C. Kelly (c1755-c1838) family of this genealogy which we will discuss in more detail below. A third group of Daniel Kelly's (and Samuel S. Kelly) appears on Warren County Georgia 1805 and 1807 Tax Lists. This Daniel could be the same as the Daniel of Lincoln. None the less, we call this the Daniel Kelly of Warren County group. In the 1820 Federal Census of Georgia we find three Daniel Kelly's listed as heads of families. These were in Putnam, Morgan, and Hall County Georgia. We believe the Daniel Kelly found in Morgan Co in 1820 is Daniel of Greene and the Daniel C. Kelly (c1755-c1838) of this genealogy. The other Daniel Kelly's found in 1820 have been lumped together as a fourth group of Kelly's which we have identified, but we do not believe are directly associated with the Daniel Kelly of this genealogy. It also appears clear that the Daniel Kelly of Lincoln County Georgia and the Daniel Kelly of Greene County Georgia are two separate persons. However, the similarity of many of the Kelly names in these two Kelly family groups certainly suggests these Kelly's maybe related and presents a direction for future work. The first records that we believe is of Daniel C. Kelly (c1755-c1838) is his name, Daniel Kelley, of Capt. Wm. Wiggins District, which appears on the Green County, Georgia Tax Defaulter's list fo 1797 and 1798. His name also appears on the 1799 and 1801 Tax list of Greene Co., Georgia. The next record is of Daniel Kelly of Greene Co. Georgia having drawn two blanks in the 1805 land lottery. A James Kelly of Greene Co. drew one blank and a John Kelly drew two blanks. (One draw was allowed for single men over the age of 21 with 3 years of residence in Georgia. Two draws for married men over age 21 with 3 years of residence in Georgia.) These lottery records suggest that James and John could be sons of Daniel. We also have the following statement from James Homer Kelly dictated to Birdie Love Kelly in the early 1950's: [Supplied by Laura Jefferson Platter - James Homer Kelly is a great grandson of Charles R. Kelly (c1785-1864).] "Great Grandfather Charles Kelly had 3 brothers: Reuben went to Atlanta in early days. John and James - unknown." In addition, we find in the , "First Families of Henry County, Georgia" by Joseph Moore a section called Kelley of Kelleytown in which it is stated Reuben Brown Kelley (1800-1875) was one of the first settlers of Kelleytown. The Kelley's came from Oglethorpe County. The article went on to say that Reuben B. Kelley was the son of Daniel Kelley and Sally Clifton. They were the parents of five children--- Charles, Jim, John, Daniel and Reuben Brown. We thus have two apparently independent sources of family information handed down via oral family history stating that Daniel Kelly had at least four sons, Charles, James, John and Reuben. Interestingly, Reuben spent his whole adult life in Henry County, where he is buried. He lived about 10 miles southeast of Atlanta but certainly near enough to Atlanta that the Charles R. Kelly family oral history of him going to Atlanta clearly demonstrates that Reuben of Henry Co. Georgia is Charles's brother. On 20 January 1808, James Kelly married Polly (Mary) Wyatt in Greene Co. Georgia. This is consistent with James getting one draw in the 1805 Land Lottery. On 16 November 1808, Polly Kelly and John Weathers were married in Greene Co. Georgia. On 17 October 1809, Charles Kelly married Betsey (Elizabeth) Wiley in Greene Co. Both James Kelly, Polly Kelly and Charles Kelly were married by James B. Holt thus showing an association between them. James B. Holt also was a witness to the Will of George Wiley, who was the father of Elizabeth. These records suggest that James, Charles and Polly were all children of Daniel Kelly of Greene Co. Georgia. The next record we find of Daniel Kelly is his name appearing on the 1817 Morgan Co. Georgia tax list. Thus sometime between about 1808 (when daughter Polly Kelly got married in Greene Co.) and 1817 he may have moved a few miles west across the Oconee River into adjacent Morgan Co. Georgia from Greene County, Georgia. Daniel next appears at age 45+ as Head of Household with his family in the 1820 Census of Morgan Co. Georgia. It is this census that shows that 2 members of this family are "Foreigners not naturalized". It is assumed that the two "foreigners" are Daniel and his wife, who family tradition indicates is Sally Clifton. This strongly suggests that Daniel is the immigrant ancestor of this family. Of the three Daniel Kelly families listed in the 1820's this is the only record that fits Daniel C. Kelly of this genealogy. This census record also lists a female, age 45+ which is likely Daniel's wife and two males 16-25, which are likely Reuben Kelly (1800-1875) and Daniel Kelly, Jr. In 1821, Daniel of Morgan Co. Georgia drew two lots of land in Houston Co. Georgia in the 1821 Land lottery. It is not known what became of this land. However, it does not appear that Daniel took to living on this land as his name shows up on the 1824 Tax lists of Morgan Co., Georgia. On 13 December 1824 Daniel Kelly, Sr. of Morgan Co. Georgia buys 202 1/2 acres of land in Newton Co. Georgia from William Harris for $400. This land is lot #204 in the 9th District of Henry County, now in Newton Co. [Newton Co. Deed Book A, p. 460.] This land is located adjacent to lands owned by Charles R. Kelly who moved from Walton Co., Georgia to Newton Co. in the early 1820's. Thus we have Daniel Kelly, Sr. living next to his son, Charles R. Kelly in Newton Co. in the 1820's and 1830's. In 1830, Daniel Kelly age 70-80 appears as head of household in Newton Co. Georgia. There are four females, age 5-30 and one male age 5-10 living in his household. There are no elderly females listed thus suggesting Daniel's wife died prior to 1830. The family of Charles Kelly is listed next to that of Daniel Kelly, consistent with their ownership of adjoining land in Newton County, Georgia. The last record we have been able to find of Daniel is a deed dated 7 January 1838 in Newton Co. Georgia when Daniel C. Kelly (Note that this is the first time where a middle initial C has been used in any record of Daniel) sold his 202 1/2 acres (Lot 204, 9th District) to John A. Aycock. This is clearly Daniel C. Kelly, Sr. as this is the same land as Daniel Kelly, Sr. bought in 1824. Daniel does not appear in the 1840 Georgia Census so it is presumed he died between his signing of the deed in 1838 and the 1840 census on which his name does not appear.
