Frank Burval (M) b. 15 December 1870, d. 10 January 1963 Pop-up Pedigree Relationship=6th great-grandson of Jan Burval. Frank's occupation: Grocer & Butcher. Biography of Frank Burval: Frank Burval arrived in New York City, at age 4, on 6 May 1875 with his parents. He went to public schools in Cleveland and started work as a baker about 1890. He was a baker until 2 Oct 1911, when he bought a home and grocery store at 2434 East 89th St. in Cleveland. He raised chickens in the garage/barn in the rear of the property, sold groceries and butchered meat in the downstairs store and raised his family in the second floor living quarters. The store was located in a predominately ethnic Bohemian/Czech neighborhood. Frank sold the store on 27 May 1943 and retired from the grocery business at age 73. He and his wife Anna, moved to a small farm in Mentor, Ohio. During and after WWII he raised chickens, turkeys, rabbits, ducks and pigs on the farm. Frank did not apply to become a U. S. Citizen until 11 Jun 1917 when he filed his Declararion of Intention in the U. S. Northern District Court of Ohio. On 26 May 1921, at age 50, as well as, exactly 46 years and 20 days after he arrived in the United States, he became a U. S. Citizen and is thus the first Burval of foreign birth to obtain U. S. Citizenship. His father, although he filed his "Declaration of Intention" to become a U. S. citizen in 1890 did not follow through with final papers and thus did not obtain his citizenship. Frank was very proud to have his citizenship as it allowed him to vote. The author has the original Certificate of Naturalization and the original Board of Elections certification card. Frank is described as fair complexion, height 5 feet 7 inchs, weight 150 pounds, dark brown hair and brown eyes in his Declaration of Intention. Frank (or "Pa" as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren) was an active man all his life. He worked constantly in his grocery store and on the farm, even in his retirement. He loved to build and fix things and could usually be found with a hammer in his hand. He was very easy going, having a very pleasant dispositon, always cheerful and showing great interest in what was going on around him, as well as, in the world. He seemed very content with life as he always whistled softly as he worked. He was not a man to take offense easily or to show anger. He is well loved and remembered by all who knew him. Frank died 10 Jan 1963, at age 92 at the home of his daughter, Florence, in Euclid, Ohio where he lived for the last several years of his life. He is buried in Highlawn Park Cemetery in Cleveland next to his wife Anna Hubert.

Frantisek's occupation: Cooper/Blacksmth. Biography of Frantisek Burval: Frankisek, or Frank Burval is the first Burval immigrant known to have come to the United States. Frank arrived at age 31 on 6 May 1875 at the port of New York aboard the Vessel Cimbria with his wife, Frantiska, age 33 and son Frank, age 4. Frank and his family are listed as "between deck" passengers No. 249, 250 and 251. His last residence prior to embarking for the United States from Hamburg, Germany, was Lisna, Moravia, in the present day Czech Republic. (This is a very small village in the Czechoslovak-Moravian Highlands near Jimramov, in present day okres Zdar nad Sazavou, South Moravia, Czech Republic). He and his family arrived in Cleveland, Ohio later in May 1875. It is not known what caused Frank to leave his native Moravia and immigrate to Cleveland. One reason based on family tradition was that "German" was being forced upon them as a language. Also the death of their second child, Frances on 12 December 1874, just four months before they left for America may have had an influence on their leaving their native Moravia where the family had lived for over 300 years. The 1870 marriage record of Frank to Frances Havickova indicates that Frank was a soldier in the 8th Czech Infantry Division. Frank and his family moved around the east Cleveland area during their first years in Cleveland. In 1880 they were at 14 Swan, in 1885 they were at 55 Warren, in 1886 they were at 74 Trumbull. About 1888 they moved to 39 Hamm (Now 5017 Hamm) where the family lived well into the 1900's. Frank filed a Declaration to become a citizen of the United States and renounce his allegiance to Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria-Hungary on 27 Oct 1890 in the Court of Common Pleas of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He apparently never became a U. S. Citizen as no record has been found of filing a petition with that court to complete his citizenship. Frank was a farmer in his native Moravia. In Cleveland he worked as a cooper, blacksmith and as a laborer. He is believed to have worked for the Standard Oil Company in Cleveland making wooden barrels which were used to ship oil products. In fact, there are old draw knifes and block planes that likely belonged to him that have been handed down in the family. It is interesting to note that in the 1880 Census, Frank indicated that he was unemployed for the past 6 months as a day laborer. In the 1900 Census at age 56, he indicated his occupation as a blacksmith-retired and that he had been unemployed for the past 12 months. Just from these two records it is apparent that work was not always available which no doubt meant that life was difficult. Frank died in 1903, at the age of 58, of asthma bronchitis. His will of 26 July 1901 left all his estate to his wife Frances. At the time of his death he resided at 39 Hamm St. (Now 5017 Hamm St.) Cleveland, Ohio. The house still stands today. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery at Woodland Ave. and E. 55th St. with his wife Frances. Cemetery records show the exact location of the grave, however no gravestone was found on a visit in August of 1982.
